I‘ve wanted to start doing these “Spotlight Interviews” for a few months now but one thing after another kept me from blogging these. So let me explain what a “Spotlight Interview” is. There is sooo much talent out there, and I am not just talking about photography. There is art in drawing, writing, decorating, organizing, baking, etc. I LOVE finding something that really inspires me. I stumbled upon Life as a Thrifter and immediately fell in LOVE with this blog. Holly Marsh is a very talented women that turns ordinary things into beautiful pieces of art. Her baby’s nursery is beyond amazing and is what got me hooked to her blog. I thought this would give new mommies some ideas on decorating and it ties in perfectly with our Nursery Contest.
Check out our interview with Holly:

Tell us a little bit about you & your family: My name is Holly Marsh, and I am a thrifter. My husband and I met in college and married 6 years ago. Today, we swoon over our one and a half year old baby girl.
How did you get started with thrifting? Although I used to teach kindergarten, I now stay at home. However, I developed my obsession for thrifting years before I became a stay at home mom. In fact, it was my mother-in-law and sister-in-law who officially introduced me to the art of thrifting. They are masters at it and continue to astound me with their talent for it.
Where do you look for inspiration? I’ve found that you can find inspiration just about anywhere these days. Magazines, Internet, TV, even your very own childhood memories can serve as a starting point for projects. The ideas really and truly are endless.
Do you have a favorite quote? “Where there is love, there is life.” –Gandhi
Favorite Movie/Book? Love Actually
Favorite Websites? It’s a bit too obvious, but Pinterest could quite possibly be the greatest Internet sensation ever. There are so many ideas at your fingertips all at one time! It’s just amazing. I also really love checking out Apartment Therapy and, here recently, Craigslist.
Favorite thing to use during your projects? I’ve found that a good can of spray paint is probably my most favorite thing to use for projects. You can just about spray paint anything these days. In fact, I have a friend who just spray painted her couch!!! How wonderful is that!?!?!?
What object can’t you live without? I really and truly would not want to live without our baby video monitor! I know it sounds silly, but the reassurance of looking into that monitor at our baby girl in her crib makes me feel so much more at ease.
What was your favorite project this past year? My most favorite project I did this year had to be the laundry room display. I loved that it was something so simple, but yet still stops me in my tracks every time I see it!
What is your most embarrassing moment? Although I seem to stick my foot in my mouth more often than I’d like, I’d say my most embarrassing moment had to be in college years ago. I was walking very quickly with a tray full of food, through a crowded cafeteria . . . on what happened to be a very wet floor. I, of course fell smack on my bum, throwing food all over. I thought for a few glorious seconds no one saw . . . until some awful boy beside me with his headphones turned up, squealed to the top of his lungs in laughter. The entire room turned to see me still sitting on the floor . . . with food everywhere.
What is your process/roadmap for when you are redecorating a new room or bringing life back to an object? It is always so exciting to decorate a new space! Sometimes picking a theme can be really helpful, like in the nursery. It was incredibly fun finding different artifacts to fit the “old school” theme. Or maybe a certain color or fabric that you like can be a good starting point. We’ve used a lot of oranges and greens in our house. So, I’ve tried to find complementing accessories that make those colors stand out. And, sometimes a piece of art can help you get started. I love the idea of one very large and loud piece of art that intentionally steals the show in the room.
Your website or blog: I’ve had such a good time thrifting that a little while ago I started a blog all about it called Life as a Thrifter (www.lifeasathrifter.blogspot.com). There you can find plenty more pictures of the nursery along with tons of fun thrifting ideas!
What was the inspiration behind your baby’s nursery? Ross’s nursery has by far been my most favorite room to decorate. As I mentioned earlier, I used to be a kindergarten teacher. For years, the classroom was my home away from home; so creating an “old school” theme in the nursery seemed quite natural. In fact, come to think of it, letters and numbers seem to be found all over our house! I guess I’ve always loved the idea of creating a fun and playful design. I’m sure it’s no surprise that many of the things you see in the room were found at thrift stores or flea markets, which to me feels personal and unique. I like the fact that I may never find something like it ever again!
